James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr., the 39th President of the United States, has passed away at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, as confirmed by the Carter Center. Carter, the longest-surviving American president, lost his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, just over a year ago.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Carter served in the U.S. Navy before returning to Georgia to run his family’s peanut farm. His political journey began as a progressive member of the Democratic Party, eventually leading to his election as governor in 1970 and president in 1976, where he defeated Gerald Ford.

Despite a challenging presidency marked by crises like the Iran hostage situation and the 1979 energy crisis, Carter brokered the landmark Camp David peace accord between Egypt and Israel.

After leaving office in 1981, Carter dedicated himself to humanitarian work worldwide, earning both a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
